Youri Regeer explains fast start after Ajax move to Werder

Youri Regeer has credited his new Werder Bremen teammates for helping him adapt quickly after joining the Bundesliga club from Ajax Amsterdam.

The 23-year-old midfielder moved to Bremen on loan in the summer with a purchase option and immediately established himself in Daniel Thioune's side.

Regeer believes the support he has received from his teammates has been central to his rapid adjustment.

β€œIt is easy to explain: with good players on the pitch, you can adapt easily,” Regeer told DeichStube. β€œAnd when the guys help you a lot, you can settle in easily.”

He said the confidence shown by the rest of the squad had allowed him to take responsibility rather than simply concentrate on adapting to a new league.

β€œThey give me confidence, play the ball to me, tell me to take charge of the build-up, help them with their build-up and support them on the pitch,” Regeer said. β€œIt helps a lot when the guys trust you.”

The Dutchman had also been determined to leave Ajax after finding himself in a difficult situation at the club.

β€œI made it clear to Ajax that I really wanted to leave,” he explained. β€œThen the club said, β€˜OK, if you really want that, we also want to help you with your career.’”

Regeer said his decision was effectively made after his first meeting with Werder.

β€œFor me, it was clear after the first meeting that I wanted to go to Werder,” he said. β€œSo I was very happy that it eventually worked out.”

The midfielder had spent the previous stages of his career with Ajax and FC Twente before returning to Amsterdam in 2025. Werder secured his services shortly before the transfer window closed, adding another option in central midfield.

His early performances have strengthened the impression that the move could work for both player and club.

Regeer has also said he would be open to remaining in Bremen beyond his loan spell if the conditions are right, although his immediate priority is to continue performing and helping Werder.
