Yamal: This is the most important match I'll ever play

Lamine Yamal faced the media on the eve of Spain's World Cup semi-final against France in Dallas, with La Roja needing the best version of the young forward, who has scored just once so far at the tournament.

"Every tournament is different. It's not the coach's fault that I haven't scored five goals. That's just how the game goes and it doesn't worry me. I've seen World Cups where Spain have been eliminated. We're winning, and that's what matters. Hopefully I can score tomorrow," he said.

The Spain international made no secret of the belief within the squad that they can win the tournament.

"Obviously we see ourselves as champions. It's difficult, but we all see ourselves as champions, just like in 2010. Why not?" he said.

Asked about the significance of facing France, Yamal was unequivocal.

"It's the most important match I'll ever play. For sure. It's a top one for me," he said.

The Barcelona forward also reflected on the impact he has had during the World Cup, particularly in the United States.

"It's lovely that football has given me the chance to be recognised in places like Chattanooga. I could never have imagined walking through a town in the United States and having people recognise me. I really value where I come from," he explained.

Asked about the coincidence of turning 19, wearing the number 19 shirt, and the final falling on the 19th, Yamal treated the question with humour.

"I don't believe in numerology because Portugal's coach said something similar and then Merino scored," he joked. He also clarified the origin of the necklace he regularly wears: "It's not a gift because I paid for it myself. It's a gift from me."

On what advice he would give his ten-year-old self, Yamal said: "I'd tell him to be himself and enjoy it."

He insisted he feels no added pressure despite being one of the standout figures at the tournament. "I don't feel pressure. I play the way I know how. I'll never play better or worse than I know I can. When you give everything and people know it, you don't feel pressure," he said.

Yamal also addressed comments that were previously misinterpreted after he said France should fear Spain.

"I'm not surprised it gets misunderstood, because I know you lot. They asked if I was afraid of France and I said no. We're European champions. It's football, like (Jules) Kounde said, and that's it," he responded.

On Luis de la Fuente's suggestion that his best performance of the tournament is still to come, Yamal accepted the challenge.

"I'm not worried about goals, but it's always special to score in matches like this. I accept the challenge, that's what I came here for," he said.

Asked what the best birthday present would be, he said: "I'd give myself a win tomorrow and a trip to New York."

He also used the platform to send an inclusive message after a separate article published in France sparked debate.

"Tomorrow we'll play one of the most beautiful matches there is, but if football is good for anything, it's for bringing people together," he said.
