Wes Brown knows exactly what it means to be a young talent at Manchester United.

The former defender came through the Old Trafford ranks, won five Premier League titles and lifted the Champions League. And now he sees echoes of his own journey in teenage prospect JJ Gabriel.

"I came through at a different time," Brown told Football Presse.

"But the skill levels now have improved. The way players move on the ball, the confidence they have, it is different."

Gabriel, he says, has caught plenty of eyes.

"If you watch him, he has been very consistent for his age. The way he moves with the ball, the way he expresses himself, it is very interesting."

Brown remembers what it felt like waiting for his own chance.

"When you are that young, all you want is one opportunity. Just one. That gives you the buzz and makes you want more."

He believes the big decision for United now is whether to push the youngster sooner rather than later.

"Can you start putting him into training more? Maybe get him a game?"

Brown knows from experience that talent alone is not enough.

"Some players can handle the pressure and some cannot. You have got to get that balance right."

But on ability, there is no doubt in his mind.

"Talent wise, you cannot take away that he has something special."

From one academy graduate to another, the message is clear.

The door only needs to open once.
