"I am in no hurry to extend my contract," Vinícius told Cazé TV. "It runs until 2027, so there is still plenty to discuss with Madrid, and Madrid has plenty to discuss with us. Madrid is calm, I am calm. The president trusts me and I trust him."
The Brazilian forward, 25, went further when pressed on speculation about a potential departure.
"I had never imagined leaving Real Madrid. I make the most of every moment I am here because it is my dream club. I want to stay here for the rest of my life."
The words offered comfort. The reality of the situation is more complex.
Renewal talks have been stuck for months. Negotiations broke down earlier in the year over the structure of a proposed deal — sources told ESPN that Madrid tabled a contract that removed a bonus element that had previously been agreed in principle, prompting Vinícius's camp to suspend discussions.
The player's current net annual salary is approximately €17 million. Madrid's revised offer is understood to be in the region of €20 million per year with conditional bonuses — a gap the two sides have not yet been able to bridge.
The club's official position is that they want Vinícius to stay and expect a resolution. Privately, Spanish media have reported that if no extension is agreed by the end of summer, Real Madrid will consider selling to avoid losing him as a free agent in 2027.
Into that uncertainty steps José Mourinho, who is expected to be confirmed as Real Madrid head coach imminently following the expiry of his Benfica clause. Bild reported this week that Mourinho has already identified RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande as his preferred replacement should Vinícius leave this summer.
Diomande, 19, had a breakthrough Bundesliga season, contributing 14 goals and 11 assists and attracting interest from Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain. Leipzig want to extend his contract and retain him for another year. Their asking price is reported to be closer to €150 million than the €100 million figure cited in earlier reports.
For now, the situation remains unresolved on all fronts. Vinícius insists he is not going anywhere. Madrid insist they want to keep him. And Mourinho is already planning for the possibility that both of those things cease to be true at the same time.
