With temperatures in Valdebebas reaching 36 degrees, the emphasis was on game time rather than resistance, as more World Cup players continued trickling back into the squad.
Denzel Dumfries passed his medical and stepped onto the pitch for the first time on Tuesday, though he watched the match from the stands alongside Ferland Mendy, Rodrygo and Éder Militão rather than featuring.
Madrid fielded a midfield built around Arda Güler in the number 10 role, with Eduardo Camavinga and Federico Valverde anchoring behind him, in a 4-2-3-1 that carried Mourinho's tactical fingerprint: both centre-backs man-marking their direct opponents, with Raúl Asencio tracking the opposition striker and Dean Huijsen picking up the Leganés number 10. Mourinho barely left the technical area in the opening half, watching from a distance as his side already showed signs of developing patterns, Gonzalo García pressing aggressively after every turnover and Franco Mastantuono causing problems down the right before an early opening was ruled out for a foul.
The breakthrough had been signalled by a Güler through-ball that Fede Valverde, handed the captaincy for the first time, failed to convert cleanly, but the Uruguayan made no mistake with his second chance: a high recovery, a short Güler carry and a measured pass allowed Valverde to finish low into the corner in the 20th minute.
The second goal arrived shortly after the hydration break, during which Mourinho became notably more animated, issuing instructions that had an immediate effect: Trent Alexander-Arnold picked out Gonzalo with a pinpoint ball, who controlled it with a header into space and lifted it just enough to beat the Leganés goalkeeper. Leganés, offering more resistance than Alcorcón had, pulled a goal back in the 36th minute when Naim cut inside on the left past Trent and found a gap for a rasping effort that came back off the post before crossing the line.
Out of view of the cameras in the second half, Madrid pushed on further. Mastantuono, the standout performer of the first friendly, converted a rebound from a Trent effort, before an own goal from Pulido made it 4-1 a minute later. Around the 70th minute, Mourinho repeated the approach from the opening game of the summer, emptying the bench in favour of academy players who filled out the side to close what is gradually becoming the shape the Portuguese coach is working towards.
