Chelsea midfielder Valentín Barco has discussed his transformation from a full-back into a midfielder, the demands of European football and his choice of dream signing.

The 22-year-old has undergone a significant change in position since arriving in Europe, having initially made his name as a left-back in Argentina. He now sees his future firmly in the middle of the pitch.

Speaking to journalist Gastón Edul on YouTube, Barco explained how his role gradually evolved.

"I was playing more as a full-back here in Europe," he said.

"At that point, I remember we prioritised playing above everything else, to show that they were wrong, that I could comfortably play here.

"Then, as the games went by, they changed my position and I gradually adapted to playing in midfield, as an interior midfielder or in a double pivot.

"And now I'm definitely playing in midfield. It's a position where I feel very comfortable."

Barco particularly enjoys playing as a defensive midfielder or as an interior midfielder in a three-man unit. He has performed in both roles, with his national team using him more as an interior midfielder and his European club football involving more time in a double pivot.

The adjustment to life in Europe, however, has not been straightforward. Barco described the experience of arriving from Argentina with a reputation as a highly rated young player, only to find that he had to establish himself all over again.

"Here, they're not very interested in what happens in Argentine football. In fact, when you arrive from Argentina, where you might be a star, nobody even knows who you are here.

"So that brings you back down to earth a bit. You arrive here and basically have to start from scratch. You don't understand anything that's happening, but that's how it is in Europe."

He insisted he never considered returning home, remaining convinced he could become an important player at a major European club.

The midfielder also highlighted the physical and tactical demands of the game, particularly in England.

"I think you obviously have to change physically, because here they're robots.

"But it's not just about your physique. You have to change your diet, your rest, tactically as well. Here, there's much more emphasis on all of that, and when you change those things, your physique changes too."

Barco believes talent alone is no longer enough to succeed at the highest level, with teams playing every three days and even smaller clubs capable of matching the physical intensity.

He also had an interesting answer when asked which player he would bring to Chelsea if given the opportunity to choose a signing.

"Cuti," he replied, referring to Argentina team-mate Cristian Romero, before confirming the Tottenham connection when asked to clarify.

Asked which goal had given him the greatest satisfaction, Barco chose his first for Chelsea: "My first goal here, for Chelsea."
