Union Berlin's official channels posted a message on Friday night as Michael Olise completed his hat-trick in the 7-0 defeat at Bayern Munich. The post read:
"Couldn't the 19-year-old brat from Barcelona just have kept his mouth shut? Kane and Olise are really red-hot and prove that they are Ballon d'Or material."
The message was aimed at Lamine Yamal after the 19-year-old who said in a recent interview that a player who scores a huge number of goals should not win the Ballon d'Or on that basis. Yamal did not name Kane, but his remarks have been read in that light.
"I think the Ballon d'Or should go to the best player in the world, full stop. Not to a player who has scored 80 goals, because when you score that many they give you the Pichichi. They are different things that people aren't understanding."
Bayern's own account responded to the post with a sweating-smile emoji, and that Kane was also asked about Yamal's comment after the match.
Kane scored twice in the game, becoming the fastest player in Bundesliga history to reach 100 goals in his 98th league appearance, while Olise scored three times, won the penalty for Kane's first goal and crossed for his second. Bayern are top of the table after four rounds.
Yamal's Barcelona lead LaLiga with a perfect record after six games. Yamal made his remarks during an interview with Movistar's Universo Valdano, in which he said he deserves this year's Ballon d'Or and described himself and Kylian Mbappé as the two best players in the world.
Union's post suggests that, after a night like Friday's, there is no shortage of players making their own case. Olise scored on 43, 73 and 76 minutes, and Kane converted from the spot on 39 minutes before heading in his second on 54, as Bayern moved top of the Bundesliga for the night. The Ballon d'Or winner will be announced in London on 26 October.
