Union Berlin are reportedly considering free agents David Alaba and Jannik Vestergaard after a 7-0 defeat by Bayern exposed the club’s defensive problems.

The result made it clear that Union have not yet been able to compensate for the free departures of Danilho Doekhi (28) and Diogo Leite (27), Fussballtransfers says.

According to Sport Bild, manager Horst Heldt “has to strike on the transfer market”, and both Alaba (34) and Vestergaard (34) fit the profile that Union are looking for.

Both defenders are currently without a club and have in the past been active in the Bundesliga for many years. Whether a concrete approach will be made remains to be seen, and Sky reports that Alaba is not currently an option.

Alaba is weighing up his next move after leaving Real Madrid over the summer as his contract expired. The Austrian veteran is a former Bayern Munich defender.
