Marcus Rashford is set to return to Manchester United as uncertainty over his long-term future continues to grow ahead of the summer transfer window.

The England forward, 28, faces a key decision period after a season in which his future away from Old Trafford has been repeatedly questioned.

Manchester United are understood to prefer a permanent transfer rather than any form of temporary move, with the club seeking clarity over their attacking structure for the coming campaign.

A release clause in the region of £40m has been reported by the Athletic, although it is structured in a way that excludes direct moves to Premier League rivals Liverpool and Manchester City.

That condition significantly narrows the domestic market for any potential deal and shifts attention towards European interest.

Despite that, Rashford is believed to be reluctant to join another English club at this stage, with a preference either to remain at United or explore options abroad if a departure becomes necessary.

Barcelona have previously been linked with interest, although their stance on a permanent move remains unclear after assessing his loan spell.

United’s position remains consistent, with the club prioritising a clean sale rather than extending uncertainty through another temporary arrangement.

The forward remains under contract at Old Trafford for two further seasons, leaving the club in a strong negotiating position.

His situation is expected to be one of the key talking points of the window, particularly given the scale of his wage commitment and profile within the squad.

Rashford’s preference is also expected to play a major role in shaping negotiations, with any Premier League switch effectively ruled out unless the clause conditions are met.

For United, the focus is now on balancing squad planning with financial structure as they prepare for potential incoming and outgoing moves.

The coming weeks are expected to determine whether Rashford remains part of the long-term picture at Old Trafford or moves on to a new chapter abroad.
