Tottenham Hotspur have rejected an offer from Newcastle United worth around £46m for midfielder Lucas Bergvall, a bid that exceeded the approaches made so far by Nottingham Forest.

Spurs have turned down every attempt to sign the 20-year-old to date, including higher proposals than Newcastle United's, though a sale would be considered if the figures reach a level the club deems suitable.

Bergvall is under contract at Tottenham until June 2031 but has informed the club of his preference to seek an opportunity elsewhere this summer. The Athletic first reported the Sweden international's desire to leave back in June, and he has since attracted attention from suitors in England and across Europe.

Earlier in the window, Newcastle sold midfielder Sandro Tonali to Spurs and also missed out on the signing of Switzerland international Johan Manzambi, who moved to Aston Villa instead, leaving the Magpies still searching for fresh midfield reinforcements.

Nottingham Forest remain Bergvall's most consistent suitor, with the Swede identified as their primary target as they look to replace Elliot Anderson following his £116m move to Manchester City. The midfielder has made 78 appearances for Spurs since joining the club in a £8.5m deal from Swedish side Djurgarden in 2024, and has been a regular feature in the club's plans until this summer's overhaul of the midfield.

Tottenham have invested heavily in midfield reinforcements this window, having completed the £85m signing of Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United alongside the arrival of Tonali in a deal worth up to £100m, moves that have squeezed Bergvall's path to regular first-team football and made his exit increasingly likely.

He made 33 appearances for Spurs in all competitions last season, recording a single goal and five assists, having also lost time to a high ankle sprain that required surgery in January and kept him sidelined until March. Despite the setback, he still featured for Sweden at this summer's World Cup, playing in all four of his country's matches before their exit in the round of 32 against France.
