A friendship forged at Sassuolo years ago has become an unlikely thread in Juventus's search for defensive reinforcements this summer, with the club now in direct talks over Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

Juventus missed out on Champions League qualification last season, and the goalkeeping and striker positions have been repeatedly identified as the areas where the club were weakest. Randal Kolo Muani, 27, has been strongly linked with a return to Turin for some time, though it remains to be seen whether a deal with Paris Saint-Germain can actually be completed.

In goal, Juventus had been credited with interest in both Alisson Becker and Emiliano Martinez as potential new number ones, but both 33-year-olds now look set to stay put at their respective clubs, Liverpool and Aston Villa.

Vicario, 29, has instead emerged as the leading alternative. La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Juventus chief executive Giovanni Carnevali and Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi have already discussed the goalkeeper directly, with the relationship between the two dating back to their time together at Sassuolo.

Vicario's path out of Tottenham has been made easier by the north London club's move for goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, which has left his own long-term future at the club uncertain.

Richarlison, 29, was also raised in those conversations, potentially as an alternative should the Kolo Muani deal fail to materialise, although the exact details discussed have not been made public. The Brazilian has just a single year left on his Tottenham contract, which could make him an economically attractive option this summer given the reduced negotiating leverage that situation gives Spurs.

Juventus finished sixth in Serie A last season, meaning they will play Europa League football this autumn rather than returning to the Champions League, a result that has intensified the pressure on the club's recruitment team to address both the goalkeeping and attacking positions before the market closes.

Richarlison scored 12 goals for Tottenham last season, more than Kolo Muani managed during his own spell in north London, a detail that underlines why the Brazilian is taken seriously as a genuine option rather than a distant fallback.

Vicario, meanwhile, would give Juventus a proven Serie A-calibre goalkeeper with Premier League experience, valuable given the struggles between the posts that contributed to their disappointing finish last season.
