Tottenham lead race for Robertson but survival is the condition

Tottenham Hotspur are the frontrunners to sign Andy Robertson this summer β€” but the deal hinges entirely on whether they can avoid relegation from the Premier League.

David Ornstein of The Athletic reports that Spurs are in "pole position" to sign the Scotland captain as a free agent when his Liverpool contract expires in June. Talks were already opened in January when Tottenham tried to sign Robertson mid-season, only for Liverpool to block the move after failing to recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan at Roma.

Robertson is focused on finishing the season with Liverpool before making any decisions. Nothing is finalised.

Spurs face a fight just to make the transfer viable. They currently sit 17th in the Premier League, one point above West Ham in the relegation zone, with seven games remaining under new head coach Roberto De Zerbi.

Should they stay up, Robertson would offer exactly what the club needs β€” experience, leadership and Premier League pedigree at a position where Destiny Udogie and teenager Souza, signed from Santos in January, are the current options.

Robertson left his mark on English football in a nine-year spell at Anfield. He joined Liverpool from Hull City in 2017 for Β£8 million and went on to win two Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup, two League Cups, the Club World Cup, the UEFA Super Cup and the Community Shield across 373 appearances.

Competition for his signature is real. AtlΓ©tico Madrid, Napoli and Juventus have all been credited with interest, and Celtic β€” his boyhood club β€” remain a possibility. Robertson is said to be leaning towards staying in a top-tier European league, which keeps Tottenham's interest alive.

The irony of Robertson potentially joining a club battling relegation after nine years at Liverpool is not lost. But if Spurs survive, the deal appears to be in place.

All roads lead to the same question β€” can Tottenham stay up?
