Torino appoint former Milan defender Abate as new head coach until 2028

Torino

Torino have appointed former AC Milan defender Ignazio Abate as head coach until 2028, with the 39-year-old arriving from Juve Stabia to take charge of a club he also represented as a player in 2008-09.

The club confirmed the appointment in an official statement: "Torino Football Club is pleased to announce that, from July 1, 2026, the management of the First Team will be entrusted to head coach Ignazio Abate, who has signed a contract until June 30, 2028."

Born in Sant'Agata de' Goti on November 12, 1986, Abate came through AC Milan's youth system and made his professional debut at just 17, in a Coppa Italia last-16 tie against Sampdoria on December 3, 2003.

His career took him on loan to Napoli, Piacenza, Modena and Empoli before a season at Torino in 2008-09 — the same club he now returns to as head coach. He established himself permanently at Milan, making 306 official appearances and scoring three goals, winning a Serie A title and two Italian Super Cups. He also won 22 caps for Italy, reaching the final of Euro 2012 and finishing third at the 2013 Confederations Cup.

Abate began his coaching career in 2021 within Milan's youth setup, before taking charge of the club's Primavera side, where he guided the team to the UEFA Youth League semi-finals in 2022-23 and the final the following season.

He made his senior managerial debut with Ternana in 2024-25, before moving to Juve Stabia in Serie B last season — his first experience in professional management — where he reached the play-off semi-finals before losing to Monza, who went on to secure promotion to Serie A.

According to Sky and CalcioMercato, Abate was chosen by Torino president Urbano Cairo and sporting director Gianluca Petrachi ahead of alternatives including Alberto Gilardino and former Torino coach Ivan Jurić. His appointment followed Sassuolo's decision to move for Alberto Aquilani, who had also been in contention for the Torino role — a domino effect that left Torino free to pursue their preferred candidate once Aquilani's path became clear.

Torino finished 12th in Serie A last season. Abate's task is to build greater consistency — and his first competitive match in charge, fittingly, comes against the club where he spent a decade as a player and built his coaching reputation.

The club's statement closed with a message that doubled as both welcome and challenge: "Bentornato a Torino! Buon lavoro e Sempre Forza Toro!"
