AC Milan sporting director Igli Tare accepted collective responsibility for the club's 3-2 home defeat to Atalanta and admitted the squad have lost their mental serenity at the worst possible moment of the season.

Tare spoke to DAZN after the final whistle at San Siro, where Milan were beaten 3-2 by an Atalanta side chasing a Europa League place and who dominated the game's opening exchanges.

"Looking at the recent matches, the right tension has been missing. We all have to take our responsibilities. The supporters deserve a different team, but we still have our destiny in our own hands."

He took care to extract something positive from a deeply uncomfortable performance.

"We take what was good from the last half-hour and analyse what has happened over the last few weeks. We have to concentrate on reaching this target, continuing to do what we were doing well, after this month and a half in which we have gone off key."

Asked whether the intense speculation about his own future โ€” given ongoing reports that Atalanta's Antonio D'Amico is being targeted as his successor โ€” was affecting the squad's focus, Tare was measured.

"Honestly, I have received no signal from the club. I concentrate completely on work, because if we reach the objective we have done a great job. The rest is part of our profession โ€” the speculation. If you do this job you have to deal with it. You have to have the right mindset to face these final matches."

He acknowledged the effect that fan protests have had but placed the problem in a different frame.

"The supporters have the right to protest. Their feelings are fundamental. I see more of a mental problem โ€” the squad is not serene, it has lost its composure. Since we dropped out of the title race the gap from the others has grown. We have to accept the criticism but at the same time know how to react to reach our objective."

A training camp before the final day is under consideration.

"We have discussed with the coach how things have been going, telling the squad we need to focus on these last two matches. The reaction has been the right one, including from the leaders. Now we need to move from words to deeds. Sunday is a match point. Perhaps going into a short retreat will help us bring home what we want."

AC Milan face Genoa away on the final day. A victory would guarantee Champions League football regardless of what Fiorentina do. Nothing less will be acceptable.
