France topped their World Cup group with a 4-1 victory over Norway, a performance lit up by a hat-trick from Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembélé.

Assistant coach Guy Stéphan confirmed that Didier Deschamps will return to the dugout for the knockout rounds.

Deschamps had been absent from the touchline after travelling back to France following the death of his mother. Stéphan passed on his thoughts to his manager before addressing a strong team display.

"Grosse pensée pour Didier — he'll be joining us tomorrow and will be at training with us," Stéphan said. "As for the game, we did what we needed to do. There was a lot of enjoyment in the way we played, plenty of intensity and plenty of chances. We scored four goals.

"Ousmane got a hat-trick and Désiré Doué scored the first headed goal of his career. Those are all positive things and we need to build on them. That said, there were also moments when we weren't quite at our best and we need to iron those out. The further we go in this tournament, the stronger the opposition will be. We have to stay alert. We're happy, we'll enjoy this win but tomorrow it's back to work with Didier."

Paris Saint-Germain winger Désiré Doué, who came off the bench to add the fourth goal, expressed his satisfaction at both the result and the collective performance.

"We are very happy tonight," Doué said. "We played a very good match as a team. We were very solid even after they scored. I won't talk about overconfidence — we know our qualities, we know we have what it takes to hurt any nation. We have talented players everywhere. Ousmane gets a hat-trick, but it could be Kylian or Michael. We have to keep being serious."

Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix, who rounded off a positive group stage for France, spoke of the ambition within the squad heading into the knockout stages.

"What does it mean? A lot of emotions, a lot of joy and there's the win at the end of it so it's wonderful," Lacroix said. "We've played very well and finished first. I can't even describe how I feel. We had our objectives and have reached them — we've had a very good group stage. Now we know the adventure is not over. We want to dream big and we're going to prepare for the next match. We know we're a very good attacking team — we can score at any moment of a match."

Norway coach Ståle Solbakken conceded that his side had been second best against France's attacking quality, while pointing to moments where the margin could have been reduced.

"Dembélé obviously today had a day when he hit the ball very cleanly and it was a struggle for us," Solbakken said. "We were not able to help Fredrik, our left-back. We should have been there more for him than we were but two of the finishes were world-class. The third one we should have avoided."

France now await confirmation of their last-16 opponent as the knockout phase begins.
