Stefano Pioli’s appearance in Naples has revived speculation over Napoli’s managerial plans, although reports say his visit is not necessarily linked to Massimiliano Allegri’s position.

The former AC Milan and Fiorentina coach was in the southern Italian city on Friday, taking advantage of the mild late-October weather. His presence has attracted attention because his name has been linked with Napoli in recent weeks.

There is, however, no confirmed indication that Pioli’s visit signals an imminent change in the dugout. Napoli were preparing for their Serie A meeting with Roma, while Massimiliano Allegri remained in charge following the team’s recent Champions League victory over Bodø/Glimt.

The report of Pioli’s presence was published by TuttoMercatoWeb. It noted that his visit did not necessarily point to developments concerning Allegri’s future, even though the former Fiorentina manager has previously been associated with the club.

That distinction matters in a situation where a coach being seen in a city can quickly fuel speculation. No meeting with Napoli officials or negotiations over the managerial position were established in the report.

Pioli has been without a club since leaving Fiorentina. His most notable recent success came with Milan, whom he guided to the Serie A title in 2022. That experience makes him a familiar name whenever a vacancy at a leading Italian club is discussed.

Napoli’s immediate focus was on the match against Roma at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. The fixture represented another important test for Allegri, whose team had endured a difficult spell before beating Bodø/Glimt in Europe.

That 4-3 victory gave Napoli their first points in the Champions League campaign and offered some relief after domestic disappointment. It did not, by itself, settle every question about the team’s form, but it provided a positive result ahead of the Roma game.

Pioli’s appearance in Naples is therefore likely to draw attention given the timing and the existing rumours. The available reporting, however, stops short of connecting his visit to a possible appointment.

For now, there is a clear difference between Napoli being linked with Pioli and the club taking steps to replace Allegri. Without further evidence, his presence in the city should not be treated as confirmation of a change in the managerial situation.
