David Speedie has delivered a blunt assessment of his relationship with Graeme Souness, insisting tensions between the pair were never resolved.

The former Liverpool striker, who played under Souness during a turbulent period at Anfield, did not hold back when reflecting on their time together.

“We played together with Scotland… he’s very… nasty. Wasn’t a good teammate for me,” Speedie told Football Presse.

Speedie’s Liverpool spell came during a transitional era for the club in the early 1990s, following the departure of Kenny Dalglish. Souness was tasked with rebuilding a side that had dominated English football in the previous decade.

However, for Speedie, the relationship never clicked.

“It’s not just me. I’m not on my own,” he added, suggesting wider issues within the dressing room during Souness’ tenure.

Despite the passage of time, Speedie made clear there has been no reconciliation.

“He apologises… I’m a bit like Roy Keane. If he apologises, I’d be alright with him — but there’s no chance of that.”

Speedie also questioned Souness’ managerial impact at Liverpool.

“He weren’t much right in his tenure as Liverpool manager,” he said.

The Scot’s spell at Anfield remains a debated chapter in the club’s history, with significant changes made both on and off the pitch.

For Speedie, however, the personal dynamic overshadowed any tactical or footballing considerations.

“It was just opinions… his and mine,” he added.

His comments underline the uncompromising personality that defined his career — both as a player and now as a storyteller.
