Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens says the squad and staff remain united behind Michael Carrick despite poor results and growing pressure on the manager.

Manchester United have endured a difficult start to the campaign, with their latest setback a 4-1 Champions League defeat against Como. The result intensified scrutiny of Carrick, who was appointed permanently after guiding the team to third place in the Premier League last season.

Lammens said frustration after matches could sometimes lead players to express themselves poorly, but insisted that the atmosphere inside the dressing room remained supportive.

“I think it’s easy to see maybe after a game when players are very frustrated, and I get it; I’m very frustrated as well because we all really want to do better and we all want to win,” the goalkeeper told Sky Sports.

“In those situations, it can happen that we say things we don’t really mean, or that we don’t get across exactly what we want to say.”

The Belgian added that supporters did not necessarily see the conversations taking place away from the pitch. He said the team needed to demonstrate its unity through performances as well as words.

“Of course, the people at home can’t see that, so we need to also try to look like that when we are on the pitch in the weekend, but I can assure you that we’re doing everything we can and we’re all together behind the coach, as a staff, players, front office,” he said.

Lammens has started all seven of United’s Premier League matches this season. He acknowledged that the team had to improve, particularly after repeatedly conceding early goals and putting themselves under pressure.

He said United had tried to evolve their approach during pre-season, having recognised that opponents would adapt to the style that had brought success under Carrick last term.

“Last season everything just clicked and went the right way for us,” Lammens said. He explained that United had defended effectively and performed well on the counter-attack, but needed to develop further in possession.

The goalkeeper believes the challenge is to combine those improvements with the intensity and collective effort that helped the side win important matches last season.

“We need a little bit more like last season, the way we fought together, even when it wasn’t going the best, and just trying to fight as a team and defend as a team,” he said.

United’s results have placed Carrick under pressure, but Lammens’ comments offer a clear public statement of support from within the squad. The goalkeeper also stressed that the players understood the need to respond, rather than rely on reassurance alone.

The immediate task is to translate that unity into better performances, starting with the team’s next league fixture against Bournemouth.
