Manchester City chose not to sign a recognised backup striker last summer, after Omar Marmoush left for Tottenham Hotspur, leaving Erling Haaland without a direct alternative in the squad.
Manager Enzo Maresca has said Semenyo could play as a number nine if required, and the Ghana international is relaxed about the idea, telling ESPN: "I've heard about his backup striker thing.
"I don't know where it's come from! But, yes, if I need to, then I'll do it. I've no problem with doing that."
Semenyo underlined his finishing with two goals in City's 5-3 win over Sunderland before the international break, taking his tally to three goals and three assists in seven appearances since joining from Bournemouth for a reported £65 million in January. He said finishing "just comes naturally" once he is through on goal.
He made clear, though, that his preferred role remains on the right wing, where he has thrived so far this season:
"I've enjoyed it. I think for wide players, we're high and wide, and we get a lot of one-v-one situations, and he backs us to win our duels, even if we lose them, that we just continue. But collectively it's quite similar to last year, and we just need to continue developing."
City have won seven games in a row in all competitions since their Community Shield defeat to Arsenal, and currently lead the Premier League with a perfect five wins from five.
Haaland has scored five goals so far this season, but Semenyo, asked about the team's progress under Maresca, added: "It's seven or eight weeks now that we've been together, so it's not been too long, but we're doing well."
City finished second in the Premier League last season, and Semenyo believes the squad's early cohesion under Maresca has them well placed to go one better this time. City's next match is away to Liverpool on 11 October.
