SC Freiburg reached the Europa League final as the competition's most unlikely contender โ a community-owned Bundesliga club with one of the lowest wage bills in European football and a fanbase that treats continental travel as an adventure rather than an expectation.
Schuster, 40, who took charge last summer following Christian Streich's retirement after 13 years, steered them through the group stage, the round of 16 and two knockout rounds before the Istanbul showdown with Aston Villa.
The margin of defeat did not reflect a straightforward match in its opening exchanges. Schuster acknowledged that Freiburg had their own opportunity before conceding, and that the speed with which Villa established a two-goal lead changed the dynamic of the contest entirely.
"Congratulations to Aston Villa โ they've been great all season. Both teams fought hard from the start and, aside from one Rogers chance, neither team created much early on. We knew set pieces would make a difference and actually we created the first. Then we fell behind to a perfectly-played situation. In that instance, you have to stay calm, but then came the second goal and then we struggled. One became two, two became three."
He made clear that the deficit had not felt terminal at the moment it stood at 2-0, and that belief had not left the dugout until the third goal settled the matter.
"Even at 2-0 it was salvageable and we had belief that we could turn it around. Aston Villa are very professional though โ they give you nothing. You have to be perfect against a team like that. We're obviously very sad but we can learn from this experience and come back better. We know what we're capable of."
Schuster was generous in his praise of Unai Emery, a manager he clearly admires, and suggested he intended to seek out the Spaniard after the final whistle for a conversation about preparation and tactics.
"I congratulate him. I hope I can meet him later and ask him about his approach and ideas. If you have a great plan and your squad can implement it then you're there."
He reserved some of his warmest words for the Freiburg supporters who had made the journey to Istanbul.
"The atmosphere today was incredible. I'm very grateful to our supporters and they contributed to us introducing SC Freiburg to Europe. In situations like this, the fans show their true selves and they stayed with us despite the fact things didn't go our way."
