Schalke are planning contract talks with Miron Muslic next spring as they look to secure the coach beyond his current agreement, which runs until 2028.

Muslic joined Schalke in the summer of 2025 and immediately delivered the result the club needed, guiding the previously struggling second-tier side back into the Bundesliga during his first season.

The 44-year-old has continued to make a positive impression since promotion. Schalke have collected five points from their opening four Bundesliga matches and currently sit 11th in the table.

The club now wants to reward Muslic’s work with a longer-term agreement. According to Sport Bild, talks are expected to begin in the spring, with Schalke seeking to extend his contract until either 2029 or 2030.

An important part of the negotiations will be the coach’s existing release clause. Muslic’s current agreement reportedly contains a €5 million to €8 million exit clause, which Schalke would prefer to remove entirely.

The Gelsenkirchen club therefore face a straightforward choice: improve Muslic’s contract while protecting themselves against a potential approach from another club, or risk allowing the coach’s current terms to remain in place.

Muslic’s rapid impact has made the issue particularly relevant. Schalke were struggling when he arrived, but his first season ended with promotion back to the Bundesliga.

The early results in the top flight have also strengthened the case for securing his future. Five points from four games represent a solid start for a side adjusting to the demands of the Bundesliga, while the club’s decision to begin negotiations next spring indicates its confidence in Muslic’s work.

A new contract through 2029 or 2030 would give Schalke a longer-term commitment from the coach while removing the release clause that could otherwise make him more accessible to interested clubs.

For Muslic, the negotiations would represent recognition of the progress made since his arrival. For Schalke, they offer an opportunity to build greater stability around a coach who has already overseen a return to the Bundesliga.
