Schalke sporting director Frank Baumann recently warned that the club had not yet reached its economic targets for the end of the year. With the transfer window still open until September 1, Baumann said another significant departure was considered very likely as the club seeks to improve its position.
According to WAZ, Sylla has emerged as Schalke’s leading sale candidate. The 26-year-old forward has been linked with a move away for several transfer windows, including a proposed switch to New York City FC during the winter that ultimately collapsed before completion.
That deal would have brought Schalke more than €5 million, and WAZ reports that the club could now accept a similar figure for the Mali international, who has six senior caps. Other reports have suggested Schalke might be prepared to negotiate for somewhere between €3 million and €4 million.
There is a clear sporting argument for keeping Sylla, however. He was one of Schalke’s most productive players during their promotion campaign, scoring 20 goals in 30 league appearances in the 2025/26 season.
The situation is therefore complicated by Sylla’s form. Rather than allowing his uncertain future to affect his preparation, the striker returned to pre-season in good condition and has reportedly impressed during Schalke’s preparations.
Head coach Miron Muslic has also been positive about Sylla, meaning the forward has an opportunity to attract potential buyers through his performances before the window closes.
For Schalke, a sale would provide a useful injection of funds at a time when the club are balancing the demands of Bundesliga football with their financial targets. Baumann has acknowledged that the financial position remains restrictive, even though the club have greater room to manoeuvre after promotion.
The club’s financial picture means every major transfer decision has a sporting and economic dimension. Sylla’s goals helped Schalke return to the Bundesliga, but his market value could now help them strengthen elsewhere if a suitable offer arrives.
There has been better news regarding Vitalie Becker. The homegrown left-back is no longer considered a departure candidate after agreeing terms with Schalke over an extension to his contract, according to WAZ.
Becker’s previous deal was due to expire in 2027, meaning Schalke had faced the possibility of losing him for nothing next summer. His new agreement removes that immediate pressure and keeps a player developed within the club’s system in the squad.
That leaves Sylla as the more obvious candidate to generate a substantial transfer fee. With Schalke’s financial targets still demanding attention, his situation could become one of the defining transfer stories of the club’s final weeks of the window.
