According to Absolut Fussball, the 23-year-old is set to depart Eintracht Frankfurt in the current window, with the club open to either a loan with an option to buy or an outright permanent sale.
Santos, whose contract runs until 2030, had been considered the frontrunner to become Frankfurt's long-term number one, but uncertain performances in preseason — including a heavy defeat to Brentford — have left the club without the internal confidence to hand him the role. Frankfurt's search for a new solution in goal has consequently intensified.
Frankfurt's preferred alternative for the position is SC Freiburg's Noah Atubolu, according to Kicker. The 24-year-old is expected to leave Freiburg this summer and wants to do so, but has yet to find a new club. Whether Frankfurt now move to complete a deal remains to be seen.
There is also interest elsewhere in the Frankfurt goalkeeping department. Michael Zetterer, who had been competing with Santos for the starting spot, has attracted attention from Leeds United, according to Absolut Fussball.
The Premier League club recently signed James Trafford from Manchester City to be their new first-choice goalkeeper, but are still searching for a backup option behind him.
Zetterer remains under contract at Frankfurt until 2029. The Munich-born goalkeeper is said to be comfortable at the club and, according to the report, not currently thinking about a departure. Given the club's recent uncertainty over Santos, Frankfurt would also likely be reluctant to sanction a Zetterer exit at this stage of the window.
Santos joined Frankfurt from Flamengo in 2023 and had initially been earmarked as the long-term successor to former number one Kevin Trapp, but neither he nor Zetterer, signed from Werder Bremen last summer, have managed to nail down the position on a lasting basis.
New head coach Adi Hütter is understood to have favoured bringing in an external solution in goal from early in his tenure, a stance that now appears to be shaping the club's business in the closing weeks of the window.
