Atalanta striker Scamacca opened the scoring and was delighted to return to the scoresheet, although the Italy striker insisted the result mattered more than his personal contribution.
“Today Calafiori told me that I would play and score,” Scamacca told Sky Sport. “Playing for the national team is always beautiful and this stadium brings me luck because I always score when I play here.”
The forward was pleased to see his prediction come true but was more interested in the collective performance.
“It was nice, but it was even better to win,” Scamacca said. “The coach gave us a lot of calmness. Good like this.”
Scamacca also reflected on Italy's development over their recent matches, believing the squad is beginning to find greater understanding despite the changes made by Roberto Mancini.
“We have played four high-level matches and we have always improved,” he said. “We are calm and relaxed, we are doing very well together and we have known each other for a long time.”
Cagliari midfielder Alessandro Romano also played an important role in the victory, providing the assist for Pio Esposito’s late goal. The midfielder, who was involved in the build-up to the decisive third goal, was more concerned with his overall contribution than the statistics attached to his performance.
“The assist arrived, but the important thing for me was playing well and managing to help the team,” Romano told RAI Sport. “I hope I succeeded.”
Romano was used both as a regista and mezzala during the match and is comfortable operating in either position.
“I can play both as a regista and as a mezzala,” he said. “I play where the coach puts me and I always try to give my contribution to the group.”
The midfielder has also had to deal with criticism following his Italy debut, but said he deliberately avoided reading the reaction and concentrated on his work.
“I didn’t actually read anything. I only heard a couple of things, but that is part of sport,” Romano said. “I think I reacted well, kept my head on my shoulders, continued working and today I am very happy with the assist.”
He credited the coaching staff and his team-mates for helping him through that period, while making clear that his focus remains on continuing his development.
“Yes, it was a great strength,” Romano said. “Both the technical staff and my team-mates helped me a lot off the pitch, as well as here on the pitch.”
The victory therefore offered both players reason for optimism as Italy continue to build a new-look side.
