Roma learn Greenwood price as Marseille face pressure to sell before June deadline

Olympique de Marseille are facing a summer in which almost every significant player is available for the right price β€” and Mason Greenwood is the most valuable asset they have.

The 24-year-old English forward finished the season with 26 goals and 11 assists in 45 appearances across all competitions, earning a nomination for the best player award at the UNFP TrophΓ©es β€” French football's equivalent of the PFA awards. He has now accumulated 48 goals and 17 assists in 81 appearances since arriving from Manchester United in 2024.

The problem for Marseille is structural. The club's financial regulator, the DNCG, is expected to scrutinise the club closely ahead of the 30 June deadline. Marseille failed to qualify for the Champions League, finishing fifth in Ligue 1, which removes a significant source of revenue and increases pressure on the club to generate funds through player sales before the fiscal year closes.

The latest development is interest from AS Roma, confirmed by La Gazzetta dello Sport on Monday.

Greenwood's father has made contact with Roma's representatives. The player is understood to be interested in the project, and Roma's qualification for the Champions League β€” secured on the final day of the Serie A season β€” was a prerequisite before the club's hierarchy felt able to move forward with the approach.

Roma know the asking price: €50 million.

The complication is that Manchester United retain a substantial sell-on clause from the original transfer β€” reportedly around 50 per cent of any profit made β€” meaning Marseille cannot afford to discount the fee. That clause makes any negotiation harder for all parties.

To fund a move, Roma are expected to sell midfielders Manu Kone and Matias Soule, generating the capital required to meet Marseille's demands without breaching financial fair play constraints.

Greenwood has publicly stated a desire to stay at Marseille but acknowledged the reality.

"This season has sometimes been difficult collectively, but individually I think I've had a good season," he said. "I hope I can stay."

The summer is likely to decide otherwise.
