REVEALED: Eberl extended Kompany's Bayern deal early to block Man City approach

Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl extended Vincent Kompany's contract last October in the knowledge that Manchester City were watching โ€” and that a move could become a serious possibility once Pep Guardiola's departure was confirmed.

Tz reports that Eberl acted pre-emptively, pushing through a new deal that committed Kompany to Bayern Munich until 2029 before Manchester City could open formal discussions with their former captain.

Guardiola announced his departure from City at the end of the season after ten years in charge, having won every major honour available to him and established the club as the dominant force in English football. City's first choice to succeed him was Kompany, who played for and captained the club for more than a decade before moving into management.

Bayern sources confirmed the club was aware of City's intentions and knew that a contract which had been due to expire in 2027 would have made Kompany's position difficult to defend once the managerial vacancy became formal.

The decision taken in October 2025 settled the matter quickly. Kompany agreed the extension within 24 hours, with neither party wishing to prolong the process publicly. Bayern president Herbert Hainer has since made the club's position unambiguous.

"With players it is often said: not for sale. And there is no transfer fee for Kompany, he is not for sale," Hainer told Sport Bild. "Vincent has a contract until 2029, which gives us security โ€” and hopefully he'll stay much, much longer."

Kompany has won the Bundesliga in each of his two full seasons at the Allianz Arena. This season he led Bayern to within touching distance of a treble, with a DFB-Pokal final and Champions League semi-final campaign alongside the league title โ€” a record that made him precisely the kind of manager City were seeking.

Enzo Maresca, who previously served as an assistant to Guardiola at City and was sacked by Chelsea earlier in the season, is now the frontrunner to succeed Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium.

Kompany stays in Munich. Bayern's fast thinking in October made sure of it.
