Real Madrid coach Mourinho says he "smelled something" in Negreira case

José Mourinho couldn't resist a knowing dig at Spanish refereeing's biggest scandal in years, on El Chiringuito.

Asked directly about the case during an interview with the programme, the Real Madrid coach responded with characteristic irony.

"When I was here, I already smelled something," he said, referring to his first spell in charge of the club. Pressed further on the subject, Mourinho added: "The Negreira case is with the justice system, let's see what it says.

"I sensed something strange, I didn't know the name, I didn't know who Negreira was. But it was strange. A few years later we now know it isn't strange at all — the only thing I find strange now is the justice system. In Italy, they did the same thing with Calciopoli."

Turning to this summer's transfer business, Mourinho was asked whether he had personally requested the signing of Real Madrid's new arrival Yan Diomandé. He was quick to reject any suggestion of dictating specific targets to the club's sporting hierarchy.

"I haven't asked for anyone. I arrive without asking for anyone, I arrive analysing the squad properly and knowing what I'd like to happen. But given everything that happened last season, I wanted to find things out for myself and behave as if I knew nothing," he said.

"A quick, aggressive winger who can play on both flanks isn't easy to find. I don't want to analyse whether he costs 120, 80 or 20 million — I analyse what he can give my team, and I said 'yes, I want him.' Whatever it cost isn't my concern."

On Bernardo Silva, whose arrival has been one of the summer's most discussed transfers, Mourinho was careful to frame him within Pep Guardiola's coaching tree rather than his own tactical system.

"He's a Pep player, Pep Guardiola's player. He contributes everything, I hope we can have few problems and a lot of stability, and for me Bernardo is a central midfielder today. But he can play as a No 10, on the right wing, he can play anywhere," he said.

Asked who might eventually fill the void left by Luka Modrić and Toni Kroos, Mourinho pointed towards Arda Güler as the closest thing the current squad has to that lineage.

"There's only one Luka and one Toni. I love Arda — I think what happened with Luka and with Bernardo could happen to him too, where you start as a No 10, an attacking player, and end up playing further back. Arda will head in that direction, and with his footballing intelligence, that's the path he can follow," he said.

Finally, asked whether he would like to have Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal in his squad, Mourinho declined to entertain the hypothetical.

"No, no. He's a great player, without a doubt. A young player with incredible room to progress. It's not normal, at 19 or 20, to be a European champion, a World champion... but we have a top squad. I wouldn't make room for anyone right now. These are my players now, and mine are the best," he said.
