Salgado was one of the most prominent full-backs in Spanish football during his playing career and is now pursuing a new challenge in management. His latest opportunity comes at a club that was only founded in June 2022 but has quickly established a significant profile in the Brazilian municipality of Serra Azul.
North EC will compete in the Campeonato Mineiro, the Brazilian Cup and Série D, the fourth tier of the national league system.
The arrival of Salgado has generated considerable interest in the region, with the former Spain international now preparing to begin work with the club.
His move to Brazil follows several years working in football development after his retirement from professional football. Salgado initially focused on developing young players in the Middle East before moving into sporting administration.
He subsequently became sporting director of Cypriot club Paphos, while his first coaching experience came in 2018 and 2019 when he worked as an assistant to Javier Aguirre with the Egypt national team.
Salgado holds the UEFA Pro Licence, allowing him to continue pursuing a coaching career at the highest level.
His most recent role came with the Saudi Arabia Under-15 national team, where he was involved in talent development programmes designed to prepare young players for the country’s 2034 World Cup.
The new position at North represents another stage in that progression and gives Salgado the opportunity to work directly with a club team again.
His playing career provides an imposing background to the move. Salgado spent the majority of his career at Real Madrid, winning major domestic and European honours and establishing himself as one of the club’s leading right-backs.
Now, however, the former defender is attempting to build a reputation from the other side of the touchline.
North’s schedule will provide an immediate test, with the club facing competition in three different tournaments and Salgado taking charge of a side operating within Brazil’s demanding domestic football structure.
For a coach still developing his experience, the move represents a new environment and a different football culture from those in which Salgado has previously worked.
The former Real Madrid defender has already spent years working in youth development, technical roles and national-team environments. His appointment in Brazil now gives him another opportunity to translate that experience into a full-time coaching position.
