Speaking to France Football in an interview only partially made public so far, the Real Madrid forward addressed accusations over his defensive contribution head-on.
"I think it's not normal, but that's the life of someone who has been close to excellence for years," Mbappe said. "Everybody has known for years what I can do. And I think that's where you enter the human element.
"It's human to always look at what someone isn't doing. When someone has been doing it for 10 years, we stop looking at what he does. So we always try to focus on what he doesn't do. From that point on, it's not something I take personally."
The forward said he struggles to understand how his prolific goalscoring record could generate controversy, with some suggesting his individual output comes at the team's expense.
"It's an argument that makes less and less sense, because if I don't score, people will ask me why I'm not scoring," he said. "I later learned that, as a footballer, in every match you play, there are millions of coaches. And not every coach is happy at home.
"Everyone has their own point of view, but I think the objective of football is to score goals — to score one more than your opponent. A player who scores goals will never be a problem for a team, because I've never seen a team win titles by not scoring any goals."
On the criticism itself, Mbappe struck a relaxed tone.
"I think I have a fair relationship with criticism, because there's constructive criticism and there's criticism that's a bit more absurd," he said. "It's not something that scares me when I have to make a decision. I don't think about whether I'm going to be criticised. If I know that, for me, it's the right decision — or that it might not be the right one but it's necessary — I think my track record has shown that I go forward without hesitation."
The comments come after a strong start to the season for the France captain, who has scored in each of his opening matches for Real Madrid across LaLiga and the Champions League, continuing the goalscoring form that made him the top scorer at last season's World Cup and in the Champions League.
