The result left Leipzig with little to defend after a match in which Bayern Munich dominated, prompting Demichelis to issue a direct apology to the club’s supporters.
“We owe our fans an apology. You can lose in Munich, but not like that. It’s a tough defeat to take. As the coach, I’m more disappointed than anyone,” he said in comments published by Leipzig.
The coach was particularly unhappy with his side’s approach both with and without possession, saying they failed to reproduce the level shown in their previous two matches.
“We were too passive without the ball and offered nothing when we had possession. We looked like a completely different team to the one we’ve seen in the last two games.”
Schäfer was equally forthright after watching Leipzig concede six goals against their Bundesliga rivals.
“We were outmatched in every area. It was a total failure from our side, and that’s why the result was what it was,” the sporting director said, according to Kicker.
“Unfortunately, we have to be very self-critical and deal with it.”
The scale of the defeat was particularly troubling for Leipzig because the team had shown more encouraging signs in their previous outings. Against Bayern, however, they struggled to impose themselves and were unable to contain the hosts’ attacking threat.
Bayern’s performance underlined the gulf between the sides on the day, while Leipzig’s own comments made clear that the result could not be dismissed simply as a difficult away fixture.
Demichelis accepted that losing in Munich was always a possibility, but said the manner of the defeat was unacceptable. His team’s lack of activity in possession and passivity when trying to win the ball back were central to his criticism.
The challenge now is to turn the disappointment into a response on the pitch. With another fixture approaching quickly, Leipzig have little time to dwell on the result and must address the problems exposed by Bayern.
Both Demichelis and Schäfer have made clear that the club expects a more competitive performance next time out.
