The SC Freiburg right-back spoke to Bild after making a strong impression during Klopp’s first international camps. Treu said the coach had lived up to his reputation for building relationships with players while maintaining clear footballing principles.
“People always talk about him as someone who wins people over. I can only confirm that. He knows how to deal with players, how to encourage them and when someone might need a hug,” Treu said.
“At the same time, he is very detail-oriented tactically and has a clear philosophy.”
Klopp also used the training camp to show the squad footage from his time at Liverpool, focusing on how his former team pressed opponents. Treu said the session gave the players an immediate sense of how Klopp wanted his ideas translated onto the pitch.
“That was really enjoyable. You almost wanted to get started straight away and put that pressing into practice on the pitch,” he recalled.
The session offered an insight into the demands Klopp is introducing as he builds his Germany side. His approach combines intensity without the ball with specific instructions about positioning and collective movement.
Treu also described how Klopp helped settle his nerves ahead of his international debut. The defender recalled the manager encouraging him to enjoy the occasion rather than become overwhelmed by its significance.
“He simply said, ‘Hey, lad, have fun, enjoy it. It’s the first time for me, too. We’ve always dreamed of this.’ That helped me,” Treu said.
“Once the game started, it really felt like a normal football match. I wasn’t that nervous.”
The 25-year-old emerged as one of the beneficiaries of Klopp’s first period in charge, featuring prominently at right-back and starting three of Germany’s four matches during the international window.
That run has strengthened Treu’s prospects of remaining in the national team picture, although competition for places will intensify as Klopp settles on his preferred line-up.
At Freiburg, Treu has also been part of a team enjoying a strong start to the Bundesliga campaign. His international progress adds another dimension to a season in which he has moved from an established club performer to a player making his case at the highest level.
For Treu, Klopp’s blend of personal encouragement and tactical clarity appears to have made an immediate impression. The challenge now is to turn that positive first experience into a regular place in Germany’s plans.
