The Brazil international, who has established himself as one of Barcelona's leaders, said he had effectively ended his time at the club before Flick arrived.
“Hansi Flick arrived at a moment (2024) when I had practically ended my time at Barcelona. I already had my head somewhere else; I wanted to leave,” Raphinha told Süddeutsche Zeitung.
The forward explained that Flick contacted him while he was on holiday following the Copa América and asked him to return to Barcelona for a conversation.
“He told me that he had the feeling that I would become very important for the team, and that the team would be key to my development as a player. Looking back, you have to recognise that it was like that.”
Raphinha said the conversation did not need to be lengthy because Flick immediately gave him the confidence he needed.
“If I hadn't had that conversation with Flick, and if he hadn't conveyed to me within minutes the conviction that he was counting on me and trusted me, I wouldn't be here right now.”
The 24-year-old has since moved into a more central role, operating as a false nine, and said he has enjoyed the change.
“It was more of a gradual process, an adaptation that lasted over the last two years and gradually moved me inside, playing more centrally than I was used to. In this way, I gradually got closer to the opponent's goal. And I like it! Because it's working wonderfully.”
Raphinha has also embraced his responsibilities as Barcelona captain, admitting he did not expect to enjoy the role as much as he has.
“I didn't know that I would like performing this role so much, that I would enjoy feeling and assuming the responsibility.”
He believes his leadership is best demonstrated through his actions rather than his words.
“If I have to be tough, I am. But I like getting along with everyone and joking with them.”
“If you talk a lot but then don't do what you have to do, nobody will listen to you. I have the feeling that my teammates think: ‘If he runs like a beast to press the opponent, I have to do it too.’”
