Potter updates on Isak fitness as Sweden prepare to face Netherlands and Japan at World Cup

Graham Potter has delivered a measured assessment of Alexander Isak's fitness as Sweden's World Cup preparations begin in earnest — and the picture is one of cautious optimism rather than certainty.

The Liverpool striker, 26, missed Sweden's World Cup playoff matches against Ukraine and Poland in March due to a leg fracture that ended his club season early. He has since recovered and was included in Potter's final 26-man squad for the tournament in North America.

At Sweden's first squad press conference, Potter was asked directly how Isak is coping.

"We have some time left and we have understanding of Alex's situation, where everyone comes from different positions," Potter told reporters.

"They have had different playing time and been loaded differently. We have to look at how things look for each individual — whether they can start, whether they can play 60 or 70 minutes."

On how Isak might fit into the team alongside Arsenal's Viktor Gyökeres, who is absent from the current camp as he fulfils his Champions League final commitments with the Gunners this weekend, Potter was characteristically inventive.

"I think he can play well with Viktor. He can drop, but he can also play wide. He is such a good player that you can give him a bit of freedom. But it's always a challenge — how do you get the best out of the players."

Gyökeres will join the squad after Saturday's final in Budapest.

"He needs to fulfil his commitments with Arsenal first," Potter said.

Sweden are drawn in Group F alongside the Netherlands, Tunisia and Japan. Their opening match is against Tunisia in Mexico on 14 June, followed by the Netherlands in Houston on 20 June and Japan in Dallas on 25 June. The Dutch represent the most testing group-stage challenge — they are managed by Ronald Koeman and qualified comfortably from European qualifying.

For Sweden, the tournament represents a significant moment. The nation missed both the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024. Qualification through the playoffs, combined with the emergence of Gyökeres as one of Europe's most clinical strikers — he finished the club season with 21 goals in all competitions for Arsenal — gives Potter a team capable of reaching the knockout rounds for the first time since 2018.

Whether Isak is ready to start from day one remains an open question. Potter will not rush the answer.
