Wirtz joined Liverpool for a huge fee and has so far produced seven goals and 11 assists in 55 competitive appearances. Those numbers have left him short of the level expected after his move from Leverkusen.
His performances for Germany have offered a reminder of his ability, however. Wirtz set up one goal and scored another in the 2-0 victory over Serbia before impressing again in the goalless draw with Greece.
Bierhoff believes those performances show why Liverpool should not give up on the 23-year-old, while also suggesting that Wirtz would have plenty of options if the club eventually decided to move him on.
"I can actually see him at several clubs," Bierhoff said on Bild's Die Lage der Liga programme.
The former Germany international specifically identified Barcelona as a potential destination, with Hansi Flick in charge at the Catalan club.
"I could also see him succeeding in other countries," Bierhoff said. "I could see him fitting in well with Hansi Flick at Barcelona. There he has space and has good footballing team-mates."
Wirtz's difficult start at Liverpool has prompted criticism because of the expectations attached to his transfer, but Bierhoff remains convinced that the attacking midfielder possesses the quality required to play at the highest level.
The Germany performances have strengthened that argument, with Wirtz looking more influential and confident when operating in an attacking role for his country.
Liverpool will therefore hope that his international form can be carried back into club football. For now, Bierhoff's comments offer another defence of a player whose first period in England has not yet matched the standards he established in Germany.
Bierhoff's assessment also comes as Wirtz continues to adjust to a different league and a different tactical environment. His international displays suggest the quality that made him such a prominent figure at Leverkusen has not disappeared.
