The 18-year-old midfielder joined Newcastle United from Ajax for £19.6 million in July, and has featured in every game the club have played this season, having been one of the standouts of pre-season despite some criticism in the Netherlands for leaving Amsterdam too early. He was again a bright spot in the recent win over Hull City.
Speaking to ESPN NL, Steur explained that uncertainty over his role at Ajax, rather than any single incident, pushed him to seek a fresh start elsewhere.
He said, "Yeah, there was a lot of change there and I sometimes had doubts about what my role would be. Eventually I just chose for a new adventure. Eventually I just chose for my own feeling. I'm just very happy there now. So far, I just think I've made a very good choice."
There had been talk of a new contract at Ajax before he opted to leave instead. Steur said adapting to the physical and tactical demands of the Premier League has already been a steep learning curve.
"I learn a lot from that. And, of course, you train and play at a high level. It's only for the better for you. So far everything is just very good and I'm very happy about that."
On settling into life in the North East, he added: "Yeah, I'm very happy with it, fortunately. I'm very happy there and how everything went. Yeah, I can only look back with happiness. I'm very much in my place there. How football is experienced there is of course next level."
Steur is the younger brother of Volendam goalkeeper Roy Steur, and his early form for Newcastle has already earned him a first call-up to the Netherlands under-21 squad.
