An agreement between the two clubs is understood to be almost complete, with talks now focused on finalising terms with the player's representatives, according to Fabrizio Romano. Newcastle United are hopeful of concluding the deal early this week.
González, 24, has made four goals from 59 competitive appearances since joining Manchester City from Porto during the January 2025 transfer window, with 40 of those coming from the start. Despite the modest goal return, he has been valued for his versatility, capable of operating as a holding midfielder, a number eight or on the left of a front three.
The Spain international's route out of the Etihad Stadium has not been straightforward. City had previously suggested they were willing to let González leave only for the right offer, while the player himself spent much of the window insisting he still believed he could establish himself as a regular starter.
Newcastle's interest has intensified following the departures of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimarães, two significant losses that have left a considerable gap in the middle of the pitch. González would arrive with Premier League experience already banked, having made his full debut for City in a 4-0 win over Newcastle the month after his arrival.
He started only two of City's final 17 league fixtures last season as competition for places intensified, and City's willingness to sanction his exit was underlined by manager Enzo Maresca, who suggested earlier this summer that players not featuring regularly would be free to explore their options.
González is under contract at Manchester City until the summer of 2029, meaning City are under no financial pressure to sell below their valuation. For Newcastle, the deal would arrive on the back of a promising start to the season, having taken a point at home to Liverpool in their Premier League opener, with manager Matthias Jaissle already having overseen the arrivals of Amar Dedic and Lukas Horníček this summer.
