Newcastle United have held talks with the camp of AS Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara, with Liverpool now preparing to counter Newcastle's move for the 22-year-old Senegal international.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed the talks had taken place, posting that Newcastle United have "genuine interest" and that "initial talks already took place." Monaco's asking price is understood to be 50 million euros, reflecting Camara's importance to the club and a contract that runs until 2029.

Camara joined Monaco from FC Metz in 2024 and has established himself as a key figure in midfield, combining defensive solidity with an ability to operate as a number six or number eight. He contributed one goal and four assists in 23 league appearances this season, with 21 starts, and has also become an important figure for Senegal internationally.

Newcastle's interest had been tracked for several months, with scouts making repeated trips to France, but the acceleration this week appears to have prompted Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes to respond.

Liverpool are also in the market for midfield reinforcement following an inconsistent season in which Arne Slot's side struggled to match the intensity of their title-winning campaign.

Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United, Brighton and Brentford have all watched Camara closely this season, but for now the battle appears to be between the two north of England clubs. No formal bid has yet been submitted to Monaco.
