Vergara, born in Frattaminore and developed entirely within Napoli's youth system, broke into the first team under head coach Antonio Conte this season when a succession of injuries depleted the squad's attacking options. He made 12 starts and contributed seven goal contributions, impressing sufficiently for the club to evaluate his position not as a squad player but as a genuine asset.
According to Sportmediaset and Corriere del Mezzogiorno, Como have been the most prominently linked club in Italy, with Atalanta and AS Roma also making multiple enquiries. Tottenham Hotspur are the leading English side, with Roberto De Zerbi having made the Italian a priority target β though Fabrizio Romano subsequently noted there were no concrete talks between the clubs as of June 9.
Vergara's agent Mario Giuffredi addressed the situation directly and without vagueness.
"We need to understand the club's position. If for β¬25 to β¬30 million they prefer to sell him, we will not stand in anyone's way. But it is not Vergara's decision, nor his agent's. It will be Napoli's decision."
He added: "Vergara intends to stay at Napoli. He is a 23-year-old player and undoubtedly the most prominent natural talent in Serie A."
For Napoli, the calculus is straightforward and uncomfortable in equal measure. Vergara is a product of their academy, meaning any sale represents pure profit. A fee of β¬30 million is entirely achievable given the level of interest. But selling a player of his quality before he has even had a full season as a regular starter would invite questions about ambition.
Napoli are also facing a managerial transition. Antonio Conte left the club at the end of the season and Massimiliano Allegri is expected to be appointed as his successor. How Vergara fits into Allegri's tactical preferences β the incoming manager is known to favour more disciplined, structured midfield roles over the kind of free-roaming creativity Vergara demonstrated under Conte β will shape the club's decision.
Tottenham's interest is also complicated. De Zerbi is a confirmed admirer, but Spurs cannot offer European football next season after their near-relegation campaign, which may weigh against them for a player who has options across Champions League and Conference League clubs.
At β¬30 million for an academy product with four years remaining on his contract, Napoli hold every card. They simply have to decide what they want.
