Manchester United have confirmed the permanent departure of Rasmus Højlund to Napoli, with the Danish striker's season-long loan converted into a full transfer after the Neapolitan club sealed Champions League qualification in Serie A.

The deal is valued at €44m as the permanent fee, added to the €6m loan fee paid last summer — a total commitment of €50m from Napoli, confirmed by Fabrizio Romano.

Manchester United signed Højlund from Atalanta in the summer of 2023 for an initial £64m, making him one of the most expensive forwards in Premier League history at the time. He scored 26 goals in 95 appearances across his two seasons at Old Trafford before the loan was agreed.

The buy obligation in Højlund's loan contract was triggered automatically when Napoli confirmed their top-two finish, with the striker's own contribution a significant factor in that achievement. He scored 16 goals and contributed eight assists in 44 appearances across all competitions during the campaign — a return that revived a career which had stalled at United following the summer 2025 arrival of Benjamin Šeško from RB Leipzig.

United's official statement was brief: "Everyone at the club would like to wish Rasmus all the very best for the future."

For Napoli, the deal secures a striker who has re-established himself as a reliable Serie A goalscorer. They begin the 2026-27 Champions League campaign with Massimiliano Allegri in the dugout following Antonio Conte's departure by mutual consent, and Højlund's confirmed presence gives the new head coach a proven centre-forward to build around.

ESPN reports that United plan to use the £38m received from Napoli to substantially cover the cost of signing Atalanta midfielder Éderson in a separate deal worth an initial £35m.
