The England international completed a British-record transfer from Aston Villa to Chelsea during the summer, joining Xabi Alonso's side in a deal worth £117 million.
Arsenal had previously been strongly linked with Rogers, but Chelsea eventually secured his signature. For the player himself, the attraction went beyond the immediate opportunity and was closely connected to the club he had grown up watching.
Rogers explained that Chelsea were among the biggest clubs in England during his childhood, particularly during the periods when José Mourinho was in charge.
“When I was growing up, Chelsea were one of the biggest teams and winning titles,” Rogers said.
“If you look at when I was born and the titles they won during the years when I really started watching football, it was the early Mourinho period, the later Mourinho period and all those players you’ve mentioned, Terry and Lampard.
“They were the ones I looked up to in the Premier League.”
Those memories helped shape Rogers' reaction when Chelsea became a genuine possibility.
“So when Chelsea came in and there was an opportunity for me to go there, it was mind-boggling to think that I could become part of that club's history,” he said.
The move means Rogers will now attempt to create his own place in Chelsea's history after growing up watching players such as John Terry and Frank Lampard.
The 23-year-old has signed a contract running until 2033 and arrived at Stamford Bridge after establishing himself as one of Aston Villa's leading attacking players.
His transfer also represented a major financial statement from Chelsea, with the £117 million fee making Rogers the most expensive British player at the time of the move.
For Rogers, though, the financial aspect was not what ultimately persuaded him.
The prospect of competing for major honours and playing at the highest level was central to his thinking.
“I’m incredibly excited by the prospect of doing something special at that club,” he said.
“Of course, there’s still a way to go and we’ve got things that we need to do, but the prospect of winning and competing at the highest level at Chelsea really caught me, and I really wanted to go there.
“That’s why I’m there.”
Rogers has therefore arrived at Chelsea with both the weight of a record transfer fee and a personal connection to the club's past.
He now has the opportunity to build on that childhood connection under Alonso, alongside a squad containing a number of established internationals and other high-profile young players.
For a player who remembers watching Chelsea's title-winning sides as a child, the next chapter is considerably more personal than simply another transfer.
Rogers is now attempting to become part of the history he grew up watching.
