Kane has continued to score prolifically since leaving Tottenham for Bayern Munich in 2023, and his performances have now made him a target for one of the most ambitious leagues outside Europe.
Garber believes Kane's potential move to MLS would represent another step in the competition's development.
“I would really love him to do it,” Garber said. “For me, it means that the dream we had – to build a real football league that would drive the development of a football nation – is coming true.”
The MLS commissioner pointed to David Beckham's arrival at LA Galaxy as a turning point for the league's international credibility.
“David put this league on the right path towards credibility and respect,” Garber said. “He came to LA when he was at the peak of his career. He came to Major League Soccer and showed the world that it could be competitive, respected and entertaining, and that it could have great players.”
Garber believes the arrival of major European names has since accelerated the league's growth, with Messi providing the most significant recent example.
The Argentine joined Inter Miami in 2023 after leaving Paris Saint-Germain, becoming the centrepiece of MLS's global expansion.
Garber now hopes the league can eventually attract players of Kane's stature while they remain capable of competing at the highest level.
“We wanted to create something that would make players of Harry Kane's calibre say: ‘I could actually consider playing in MLS,’” he said.
“I think Messi proved that it was possible.”
Kane remains under contract with Bayern until 2027 and has been linked with an extension in Germany, meaning an immediate move to MLS is not on the cards.
However, Garber's comments underline the ambition of the league and the profile Kane would bring if he eventually chose to make the move across the Atlantic.
The England captain has previously spoken about his interest in playing in the United States later in his career, leaving the possibility open for the future.
