The Argentina captain addressed the result on Monday, expressing his sadness at losing a World Cup final while acknowledging the champions' quality on the night.
"The pain is very great and it will take time for this wound to heal. But I also keep everything good... the games we turned around by giving everything, which will stay in the memory forever, the support of an entire country that, together with the work and effort of this group, took us back to being, once again, among the best in the world. Today it's hard to appreciate what we did, but this group reached two consecutive World Cup finals," he wrote, before thanking his compatriots.
"Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for every greeting and every message. Once again we managed to come together as a country and be all together, sharing the immense pride of being Argentine."
Messi, who suffered his second World Cup final defeat with Sunday's result, once again experienced the bitter side of the sport after taking the match to extra time and enduring a difficult night, kept largely at arm's length from the opposition's goal throughout. The Argentine forward worked to help build attacks and led the final push after Ferran Torres's winner, but this time could not repeat what he managed against Cape Verde, Egypt, Switzerland and England earlier in the tournament. The Rosario-born forward reserved the final line of his statement to congratulate Spain.
"I also want to congratulate Spain on the championship."
One of the biggest question marks now surrounding Messi is his continuity with Argentina, and how much longer he will extend his international career should the answer be affirmative. He remains the team's biggest star despite his advancing years, and his decision will shape the immediate road ahead for the Albiceleste.
In some ways, Lionel Scaloni's own future appears tied to Messi's, with everything likely to depend on the forward's remaining strength and competitive hunger in the months following this defeat. The 2028 Copa America, to be held in the United States, offers a further incentive to believe Messi's story with Argentina has not yet reached its final chapter.
