The 26-year-old forward joined Manchester United from Brentford last summer for a fee reported at around ยฃ71 million, and has scored ten goals in his debut season.
Only Benjamin Sesko, with twelve, has scored more for the club this term. United sealed their return to the Champions League after a three-year absence when Kobbie Mainoo's winner gave them a 3-2 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford earlier this month.
Speaking on United's Inside Carrington podcast, Mbeumo was open about how much the achievement means to him personally.
"I just can't wait. I know it means a lot for the club and for the fans, so I know it's going to be an unbelievable atmosphere."
"I'm feeling really proud of myself, obviously because it's never been easy for me. I have always had to work hard, but I never forgot about what I was wanting."
"I always believed in myself because I knew I had special abilities as well. I always tried to work hard and I'm really happy for what is coming for me."
He traced the ambition back to his earliest years in professional football, starting out at Troyes in Ligue 2 before joining Brentford while they were still a Championship club.
"I always told myself I wanted to be the best player in the world, so playing these kinds of competitions was really high in my head. Even when I started in lower leagues and lower teams, I always had this target in my mind."
Cameroon failed to qualify for the World Cup, meaning Mbeumo will have no tournament this summer. He is expected to use the pre-season tour under Michael Carrick โ widely anticipated to be confirmed as permanent manager in the coming days โ to rebuild the sharp form that dipped in the second half of the campaign.
United are one of 18 clubs already confirmed for next season's expanded Champions League league phase, which features 36 teams.
