According to Tuttosport, Juventus have already reached a preliminary understanding with the Argentina international over personal terms. The 33-year-old is reported to be ready to sign a three-year contract worth around €5m per season, a deal that has the full backing of Juventus head coach Luciano Spalletti.
Martinez has been Aston Villa's first-choice goalkeeper since joining from Arsenal in September 2020, a deal worth £20m at the time. Since then, he has made over 250 appearances for Villa, helping the club win the Europa Conference League and qualify for the Champions League on two occasions.
His current contract situation has added momentum to the speculation, with Martinez entering the final year of his deal at Villa Park. According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Martinez has made clear to those around the situation that he would like to move to Juventus.
Despite the player's stated preference, the formal negotiation between the two clubs has yet to fully get under way. Reports suggest much of the groundwork on personal terms was carried out under former Juventus chief executive Damien Comolli, who focused his efforts on agreements with the player's representatives rather than opening direct talks with Aston Villa.
That task now falls to incoming Juventus chief executive and general manager Giovanni Carnevali, who arrived from Sassuolo this week to take charge of the club's major transfer dossiers.
According to Sky Sport Italia, Martinez remains a priority target for Juventus even after the change in leadership, with Carnevali's relationship with the player's representatives potentially helping to accelerate matters.
Aston Villa do not consider Martinez untouchable and have already begun exploring potential replacements in the goalkeeping market.
The Premier League club has held contact with Parma over a potential move for Japan international goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, 23. Suzuki has made 57 appearances for Parma since joining from Urawa Red Diamonds in the summer of 2024, though a broken hand kept him out for a 16-match spell last season.
On the question of a fee for Martinez, Juventus are understood to be hoping to secure his signature for a minimal compensation payment given his age and contract situation. Aston Villa, for their part, are reported to be seeking a fee in the region of €15m, aware that demanding a higher figure for a goalkeeper who turns 34 in three months would be unrealistic.
A move involving Martinez could also help Aston Villa's position under Premier League and UEFA financial regulations, given the scale of his current wages. For Juventus, signing an experienced, proven goalkeeper would align with the broader approach being shaped by Carnevali, who has prioritised bringing in established figures who fit Spalletti's plans.
Should the two clubs find a figure that satisfies both parties, Martinez's move to Turin would mark the end of a six-year association with Aston Villa during which he established himself as one of the Premier League's most prominent goalkeepers.
For now, the gap between the two clubs' valuations appears to be narrowing, with reports in Italy suggesting a compromise fee somewhere between the two positions remains the most likely outcome.
