Bastoni has been Inter Milan's most consistent performer this season and was one of the key figures as the club sealed their 21st Scudetto with a 2-0 win over Parma on Sunday. Barcelona have identified the 27-year-old as their primary defensive target for the summer, viewing his left-footedness, technical quality on the ball and ability to carry out from the back as exactly the profile Hansi Flick's system requires.
Mundo Deportivo has reported that Bastoni has made clear his desire to join Barcelona, though Inter have not received any formal offer. Reports from Corriere dello Sport, however, suggest Bastoni is less certain about leaving than Barcelona's camp is indicating.
Marotta addressed the situation directly in an interview with Radio Anch'io Sport on Sunday evening.
"He's a great talent. He was unlucky in certain episodes — everyone had their eyes on him. He made that naive mistake against Juventus with the simulation. He was the first to admit it, but we protected him. He is a great champion."
On Barcelona's interest, Marotta was candid but firm.
"I won't deny there is interest from Barcelona, but nothing concrete yet. A player leaves if he expresses a desire to go. At this moment he is happy to be with us and we are happy with him."
Sporting director Piero Ausilio was equally direct, separately telling Radio Anch'io Sport that Inter have not received any offer and that the club is confident Bastoni will continue.
Inter's asking price for the defender is understood to be between €60 million and €70 million. Barcelona's financial situation under La Liga's salary cap regulations makes meeting that figure difficult without prior departures. The club have identified Jhon Lucumí of Bologna as a cheaper fallback option, valued at around €25 million, but their preference is Bastoni and they intend to pursue him as the summer window opens.
Bastoni has two goals and six assists in 38 appearances across all competitions this season. His contract with Inter runs until 2028.
