The 46-year-old Italian, who takes over from Pep Guardiola having previously coached Manchester City's under-23s and served as his predecessor's assistant, is facing arguably the biggest challenge of his managerial career in succeeding a manager regarded as the gold standard in the dugout.
Before that process begins in earnest, though, English media wanted to know more about the club's new figurehead.
Unsurprisingly, Maresca fielded lengthy questions on the transfer window at his first appearance of the season.
"I think there's always something to do, given our ambitions and the dynamics of the transfer market. There's probably something to sort out, but we're working on it," he said – a fairly vague answer that did little to satisfy the assembled press, who were far more interested in whether World Cup winner Rodri will be sold this summer.
"First of all, I have to say that big players are always the subject of rumours, so that doesn't worry me. I think it's normal, especially since they won the World Cup and he's one of the best players. I think every coach would love to have Rodri in their team, because he's an exceptional player.
"But for now, he's going to have surgery on Monday. He needs a holiday, he needs to rest and recover, and then he'll come back to us," Maresca said.
That was as much detail as reporters could extract, leaving speculation to continue in Spain, where Rodri's situation has become something close to a matter of national interest.
Maresca also addressed the situation of Jack Grealish, who returned to the club following a loan spell at Everton after previously being pushed towards the exit by Guardiola over his lifestyle. The head coach confirmed he intends to assess the winger in person before making a decision on his future.
"At the moment, he's here. He's a Man City player," Maresca said. "I always said the same. In any club I join, I like to know if there are players that belong to the club. It's my duty to try to coach them.
"Jack is here. I have a good relation with Jack since I left. Also, we keep in touch, and the reason why is because he has a big heart and he's a very good guy. So this is the reason why."
Maresca's assessment of both situations is likely to continue in the coming weeks as City finalise their squad ahead of the new Premier League season.
