Manchester United tracking Valverde as Madrid consider sale after dressing room fallout

Manchester United are monitoring Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde as the Spanish club weigh up whether to sell the Uruguay international following his dressing room altercation with Aurélien Tchouaméni.

The Mirror reported that United are keeping close tabs on the situation at the Bernabéu as they plan a significant midfield rebuild ahead of their Champions League return.

Casemiro is leaving at the end of the season and Manuel Ugarte is expected to be offered to other clubs, leaving Michael Carrick's side needing at least two senior central midfielders.

Valverde, 27, has found himself in an untenable position at Real Madrid following the incident. Senior dressing room figures have sided with Tchouaméni and pushed for Valverde to be sold, sources told the Mirror. The club has already fined both players €500,000 each — reported as the largest disciplinary fine in Spanish football history — and closed the formal proceedings, but the underlying tension in the squad has not been resolved.

Valverde is contracted to Real Madrid until June 2029 with no release clause, meaning any sale would require the club to agree a fee likely to exceed €80million based on his recent valuations. He scored nine goals and provided 13 assists in 48 appearances this season — his most productive campaign in a Madrid shirt.

United have also shown interest in Tchouaméni, the source material noted, though the French World Cup winner is understood to be reluctant to leave following the public support shown to him by the club throughout the incident. Real Madrid are more likely to sell Valverde than Tchouaméni given the internal dynamics.

Whether Valverde would sanction a move to Old Trafford — or anywhere — is a separate matter. The Uruguayan is well compensated in Madrid and has previously expressed strong attachment to the club.

A move to a side fighting to avoid relegation last season before an unexpected Champions League return would be a significant step down from his current platform.

United's more advanced midfield targets are Atalanta's Éderson — for whom personal terms are agreed — and Sunderland's Noah Sadiki. Valverde would represent a more speculative and expensive addition to that list.
