The Sun reports that well-placed sources confirmed Manchester United are open to offering fresh terms to Heaton, whose current one-year extension expires this summer. The deal, if agreed, would be Heaton's second annual renewal in as many years.
Heaton joined United's academy in 2002 as a teenager and turned professional at the club in 2005 before leaving without making a first-team appearance. He returned from Aston Villa in 2021 and has since served as third-choice goalkeeper behind André Onana and, more recently, Belgian shot-stopper Senne Lammens — who arrived on transfer deadline day last summer and has since established himself as the club's preferred starter.
His value in the squad extends beyond the pitch. Heaton is regarded as one of United's key dressing room leaders — a steadying presence during a turbulent season that has seen multiple managerial changes — and his qualification as both a homegrown and club-trained player satisfies criteria that reduce pressure on squad registrations in European competition.
Czech goalkeeper Radek Vitek, 22, returned to Carrington last week following a loan spell at Bristol City where he made 23 Championship appearances, keeping eight clean sheets.
He is contracted to United until 2028. The club must now decide whether to keep him as a backup to Lammens, sell him to meet the interest from Championship clubs, or arrange another loan. Heaton has been working with him since his return.
United's goalkeeping situation heading into next season's Champions League will require at least two experienced options. If Lammens is the confirmed number one, the question of who backs him up — Vitek, Heaton, or a new signing — is among the more straightforward decisions Michael Carrick's side faces.
