The Cameroon international was involved in the incident after Trabzonspor’s 2-0 European victory over Hearts on Thursday night. According to VoetbalPrimeur, Onana was travelling home when his vehicle was reportedly struck from behind, triggering a chain collision.
Onana had played the full match and kept a clean sheet as Trabzonspor defeated the Scottish side in the UEFA Conference League. Mohamed Salah scored from the penalty spot in the first half, before Franculino Djú added the second after the break.
Reports from Turkey said another vehicle hit Onana’s car at speed, pushing it into a vehicle in front. The goalkeeper was taken to hospital for medical checks but was released shortly afterwards.
Trabzonspor president Ertuğrul Doğan offered reassurance about the 30-year-old’s condition in comments to Turkish broadcaster TRT Spor.
“There is nothing serious, nothing critical. We wish him a speedy recovery,” Doğan said.
The club has not indicated that Onana suffered a serious injury, although his availability for the next fixture was not immediately clear following the incident.
Onana is playing for Trabzonspor on loan from Manchester United, having spent the previous season with the Turkish club. His United contract runs until 2028.
The goalkeeper joined United from Inter in 2023 after establishing himself as one of Europe’s leading ball-playing goalkeepers at Ajax. His time at Old Trafford proved difficult, and the move to Turkey gave him an opportunity to rebuild his form and confidence.
He has made 45 official appearances for Trabzonspor, keeping 11 clean sheets while conceding 52 goals, according to figures cited in the original report.
The latest incident occurred away from the pitch and, based on the club president’s comments, did not result in a critical medical situation. However, any decision about his immediate return to action will depend on the outcome of further assessment and the club’s medical staff.
Trabzonspor’s next domestic fixture was scheduled against Rizespor on Monday. At the time of the reports, there was no confirmed update on whether Onana would be available for that match.
The priority remains the goalkeeper’s wellbeing following the collision. Doğan’s statement was intended to ease concerns, while further clarity over Onana’s fitness and availability is expected from the club.
