Minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been pushing the club to unearth hidden gems from academies across the country, develop them into world-class talent and build sellable assets for the future, having criticised United's own academy standards as having "really slipped" back in October.
The club have already wrapped up deals for several promising youngsters in recent windows, including Sekou Kone, Patrick Dorgu, Ayden Heaven, Chido Obi and Harley Emsden-James.
Manchester United also completed a separate deal on Monday to sign 18-year-old left winger Tynan Thompson from Tottenham for £4million, a fee that could rise to £8million with add-ons.
Konde, still only 16, is regarded as a highly promising winger with electric pace and strong dribbling skills, and played for Liverpool's Under-18s last season - a side that finished 21 points behind United's own Under-18 team. He is at his most effective on the left flank but is capable of playing on the opposite side or through the middle as a centre-forward, giving United's academy staff a versatile option to work with as he continues his development.
Manager Michael Carrick has been a keen advocate for promoting academy talent since taking charge, and the club's willingness to pursue young players from direct rivals underlines the growing ambition behind United's recruitment strategy at youth level, following the earlier additions of Heaven and Obi from Arsenal.
United are understood to be in talks with Konde's representatives, with contact already established between the two parties, though it remains early in the process and there is no suggestion a deal is imminent. The teenager has risen quickly through Liverpool's academy ranks, already appearing regularly for the Under-18s despite only turning 16 earlier last season - a mark of the regard in which the club's coaching staff hold him.
Should United succeed in prising Konde away from Anfield, it would represent a significant coup given the rarity of academy transfers between the two clubs, whose rivalry rarely extends to business at youth level.
United are also said to be showing interest in a separate Liverpool academy player, though any deal for Konde remains the more advanced of the two situations as things stand.
